Portraits of the Self is an ongoing body of work in which He Jun uses contemporary ink painting to explore the state of the self in relation to the world, rather than external appearance.
In Chinese philosophy, the self is not understood as a fixed identity,
but as a process that is constantly changing and connected to nature and inner experience.
This series is developed from that perspective.
The figures in these works carry no specific identities.
They function instead as expressions of inner states,
reflecting moments of quietness, solitude, and self-reflection.
Through a restrained and simplified ink language,
He Jun allows the self to return to an undefined state,
inviting a renewed awareness of the relationship between the individual and the world.
