A Meeting, and a New Home for the Artwork
A European collector’s in-person acquisition
In October 2026, we met in Hong Kong with a collector visiting from Europe. He had travelled to see Prayer, a silk painting by Zhang Pian. Standing together before the work, we spoke about its details, the ideas behind its creation, the materials and techniques, and the Eastern imagery it carries.
When he decided to make Prayer part of his collection, the meeting became a new beginning in the artwork’s journey. For us, an artwork’s handover is more than a transaction: it is the moment a work begins a relationship with a new home, space and viewer.
A Contemporary Voice in Traditional Imagery
Prayer is painted on silk, with mineral pigments applied in layered washes and gold leaf used in selected areas. Drawing inspiration from the figures and decorative motifs of Dunhuang murals, Zhang Pian reimagines these references through a contemporary composition. The figure’s quiet expression, layered clouds and finely worked textures come together, allowing an ancient visual memory to find a new response in the present.
During our meeting, we also discussed the work’s materials, the artist’s process and recommendations for framing and long-term care. We want every collector to feel informed and confident in living with a work. After it reaches its new home, we remain available to offer guidance on framing and care.
People from different cultural backgrounds can meet through a work of art. We are grateful for this collector’s appreciation of Chinese art and for his trust in bringing Prayer into a new home.
