Qiao Hao, born in 1964, is an independent Chinese contemporary artist working across ink painting, oil painting, and calligraphy.

His practice is rooted in the visual traditions of Chinese painting while remaining open to a freer, more personal approach to composition and expression. Rather than reproducing classical landscape formulas, Qiao Hao uses ink, color, space, and brushwork to explore atmosphere, distance, and the relationship between people and nature.

Mountains, mist, water, boats, trees, and small human figures frequently appear throughout his work. These familiar elements are simplified and reorganized into compositions that feel spacious, fluid, and highly individual.

Artistic Language

A defining feature of Qiao Hao’s work is his use of contrast between dense brushwork and open space.

Dark, concentrated passages of ink give weight and structure to mountains and vegetation, while large areas of untouched or lightly painted space suggest mist, water, sky, and distance. The resulting landscapes often feel expansive without becoming visually crowded.

Human figures are usually small within the composition. A solitary traveler, a boat crossing the water, or a pavilion hidden among the mountains introduces a subtle narrative and gives scale to the surrounding landscape.

These details invite the viewer into the painting while allowing nature to remain the dominant presence.

His works also change with viewing distance. From afar, the composition is perceived through broad masses of ink, rhythm, and atmosphere. At closer range, smaller details and restrained touches of color gradually emerge.
